Combining Modern Day Technology with Traditional Manufacturing Methods
Formula has been selected as the turn-key supplier for Dream Ship Victory’s (DSV) three wooden gaff-rigged schooners. Formula is creating complete masts, spars, rigging and sail control solutions for the yachts and faces the challenge of combining its modern masts and spars with traditional sails and fittings.
DSV’s shipyard and production facilities are located in Bozburun, Turkey; the historic centre of wooden boatbuilding in Turkey. The unique yachts are built exclusively with the finest woods; combining modern laminating techniques with locally preserved craftsmanship, and boast contemporary amenities with traditional styling.
Currently in construction is a 117ft (35.70m) and 137ft (41.90m) yacht, which are due to be launched in summer 2008, as well as a 172ft (52.40m) model due to be launched in summer 2009.
John Boyce, who heads up the superyacht construction and management at Formula Spars commented; “This is a fantastic project that the team and I have been delighted to be involved in. DSV has designed the yachts with traditional sail plans but have chosen to use modern technology in systems and materials to maximise both sail handling and performance.”
Formula will use carbon fibre in all spars including bowsprits and the saving in weight alone will be considerable with the three masted gaff schooners.
John continues;“Other technology incorporated in this project will be modern captive winches and the use of aramid rigging where appropriate. Each of these careful considered refinements will improve handling and add to the joy of sailing the beautiful yachts.”
